SIMILAN ISLANDS LIVEABOARD TRIP # 17 "Christmas Trip"

"The Christmas Trip 2008"
It was gorgeous day on 24th of December 2008.
It was nice and calm while we were sailing across the ocean on the way out to the Similan Islands. The trip leader this time was Marcel. Seb and Ricky were also on-board and our brand new Divemaster Trainee Gudrun joined the trip as a snorkeling guide.

The first location to south of the Similans this trip was Honeymoon Bay for check dive and then moved over to Anita's Reef or Eel Garden before dinner.
Shark Fin Reef was fantastic visibility. West Of Eden was lovely with lots of Giant Table Corals and schools of Fusiliers before we moved to the other side of island 7 to East Of Eden... white sandy at the bottom with lots of beautiful pinnacles covered with colorful soft corals and sea fans. Night dive was at Honeymoon Bay with lots of Lionfish (my favorite), and a Giant Moray Eel. The first morning started at Hin Pusar or Elephant Head Rock for the most popular swim through and massive boulders. Next stop on this trip was Beacon Reef with lots of Clownfish and then we headed to Koh Bon for the Manta Rays! Even if unfortunately none of them came out to see us, the dive was still gorgeous, visibility was amazing.

People who've got certifications for their Christmas present this year... well done divers and welcome to the Wicked Diving family. Congratulations! to 2 new Junior Scuba Divers Louise and Emile. WOW!! 6 new Open Water Divers Tess, Lynn, Benoit, Anne, Maya and Marco and the next level Advanced Open Water Diver Nina. Special thanks to Marcel, Seb and Ricky.

Merry christmas to all of you guys we wish you all the best. We look forward for your visitting in the next holiday. Enjoy traveling and have a safe journey home.

SIMILAN ISLANDS LIVEABOARD TRIP # 19 "NEW YEAR TRIP"

"HAPPY NEW YEAR" we wish you all the best for the future.
On 31st December 2008 we set out to paradise once again for the last time in 2008, the Similans for new years eve! The wicked crew this trip was Filip the trip leader to bring in the new year, Marcel as the new years Divemaster who took the honor of guiding some fundivers and Tuk as an Instructor led two new Open Water Divers from last trip who just signed up to the 2nd level as Advanced Open Water Divers!

This trip we went up to north of the Similans and the first location we hit this time was Koh Bon, even though once again there were no Manta Rays, the visibility still was amazing and then we headed to Turtle Rock before a night dive at Donald Duck Bay, there was a massive Loster and lots of Giant Moray's hunting at night.

Beacon Reef was the first dive site of the year 2009, that was lovely morning dive with a Leopard Shark beside the wreck then after breakfast and relaxing we went to Anita's Reef, that was gorgeous, lots of Garden Eels and Khuls Stingrays. A fantastic dive at West Of Eden with lots of Tuna cruising by, before we headed back to Donald Duck Bay for our new years eve's dinner and "the Wicked Diving's new years lottery".

North Point is the dive site you'll never get disappointed with, a boulder site with lots of different marine life and swim throughs. We ended the dive with two Sea Turtles, that was lovely. Bangu Bay was really nice with a Banded Sea Snake and another Hawksbill Turtle. Koh Bon was the last dive location for the new years trip, and a special treat .... a Manta Ray...("Marcel, you're just lucky, right?")

We'd like to thank to all of you guys who joined us, you're wicked!
The first couple who were with us two trips in a row and congratulations to two new Advanced Open Water Divers Pascal and Christelle. Very well done, guys.
Iain and Bethan from the UK. Guido from Italy. Nina and Kathi from Germany. Hopefully everyones enjoyed it and thanks to Marcel who did a good job. Especially a Manta Ray, LUCKY wasn't he?
Dan and Emily, a sweet couple from Australia. Michelle from Canada. What you guys have seen this time we hope you enjoyed it and come out again in the next holiday for more more and more!
Pavel from Germany, Malena from China and their first time to the Similans. Happy ending with 2 Turtles and no more seasick for you, Pavel in the next live-aboard.
Oh Yes! the wicked family on the trip, thanks to you all. Chris, Pippa, Emma, Marcus and Alice. Snorkelers and junior snorkelers. We hope you guys had a great time bringing in the New Year, and your first time on a live-aboard. See you for some more new activities again soon.... scuba diving for example...hehe!

Fun Corner!
The Wicked Diving new years lottery and the best price was breakfast served from "girl" Filip. Dan seems to be really happy with his prize which was a pack of Seasickness tablets! Emma took the honor of drawing the dive site map for the trip, and Christelle won the most expensive price which was join a Wicked Diving trip for free (in 2009)...So jealous!!!

Thank you everyone once again for your very warm visit. We are glad to see the smiles and laughter and we are glad to be apart of your holiday. Enjoy traveling and have a safe journey home everyone.

Whale Sharks - Sad News in Malaysia

As Whale Sharks are an endangered species (more on that here) and their numbers are in decline, it is truly sad to hear of stories like this. After reading this article I was even more depressed to find that the authors did not even do enough research to point out that this species is endangered or that anything is done to help educate the public.
In fact they posted the article as if it was a great thing that these guys caught such a thing.

The following story is from Penang, Malaysia. So this could easily have been one the Whale sharks that just left this area, or was on it's way up here.

Whale of a catch for deep-sea fishermen

By ANDREA FILMER

GEORGE TOWN: Four fishermen had a huge New Year’s surprise when an unexpected visitor swam into their nets, 10 nautical miles off the coast of Teluk Bahang.

The group was deep-sea fishing near Pulau Kendi when a 7m-long whale shark got entangled in their trawl nets at 3am yesterday.

“We didn’t know what was in the net, so two of us pulled it up and saw the shark.

“In my 30 years of being a fisherman, I have never seen this. I didn’t even know what species it was,” said fisherman Keh Chai Yang, 52.

They returned to shore with the shark at 5.30am.

Keh said they had informed the state Department of Fisheries of the two-tonne whale shark and would surrender the fish to them.

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a filter feeding shark that is the largest living fish.

The slow-moving creature is known for its playful character and poses no harm to humans.

Don't eat Shark Fin soup - if it's on the menu, leave the restaurant.
